Barium stearate, white or yellow amorphous powder, melting point >225ºC, has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, soluble in hot ethanol, benzene and other non-polar solvents, insoluble in water and ethanol. When heated and dissolved in an organic solvent, it becomes a gel when cooled and has water absorption in the air. Sulphide free. Strong acids decompose into stearic acid and corresponding barium salts.
