0.4 milligrams of folic acid is used to prevent neural tube defects in the fetus. Pregnant women who take 0.4 milligrams of folic acid during the preconception period can reduce the rate of neural tube defects in the fetus by 85%. Five milligrams of folic acid can be used to treat anemia in women.
